WHAT IS DOMESTIC VIOLENCE?
by Irene Shao
Domestic violence (also known as Intimate Partner Violence): violence or aggressive behavior between intimate partners over the age of 18
When it comes to domestic violence, there are six different types of abuse: physical abuse, verbal abuse, sexual abuse, mental abuse, emotional abuse, and financial abuse. These types of abuse help the perpetrator to gain and maintain power and control over the victim.
The group that experiences the highest rates of domestic violence is females ages 18 to 34, and 24 people every minute are victims of rape, physical violence, or stalking by their partner in just the United States alone.
1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men in the United States that are aged 18 and older have been the victim of physical violence by an intimate partner in their lifetime.
Only 34% of people receive medical care for injuries caused by their intimate partners.
Although the results of domestic violence are horrific, many people may not left their abusive relationships due to various reasons. It could be that they do not know that they are experiencing domestic violence. It could be that they are afraid of the backlash they may face from their family and friends for leaving their spouse or partner. It could be that they are struggling financially. Despite the reason, they should seek help to escape the abusive condition they are living in.
